Verb tenses: SIMPLE PRESENT

FORM

The simple present has a very easy form. The form is the following one:

(VERB)+s/es in the third person.

Examples:

I speak English
You speak English
He/she/it speaks English
We speak English
You speak English
They speak English

We are going to see several rules for adding -s to the third person singular

1. Verbs ending in -y: When a verb ends in y immediately preceded by a consonant, the y is changed to ie before the ending s is added. In each of the following examples, the consonant immediately preceding the final y is underlined.

Examples:
Study --------> Studies
Fly ----------> Flies

2. When a verb ends in y immediately preceded by a vowel, the y is not changed before the ending s is added. In each of the following examples, the vowel immediately preceding the final y is underlined.
Examples:
Play --------> Plays
Say ----------> Says

3. When the verb ends with a silent 'e', the ending s is added.

Examples:
Close --------> Closes
Note ----------> Notes

4. When the verb ends in 'o', we have to add '-es'

Examples:
Do --------> Does
Go ---------->Goes

5. If the verb ends in 's','z','sh', 'tch' or 'ch' we have to add '-es'

Examples

Miss-------->Misses
Buzz-------->Buzzes
Hatch------->Hatches
Finish------>Finishes
Teach------->Teaches

Silent e
Vowel + y
Consonant + y
Verbs ending in o
Verbs ending in s, z, sh, tch, ch
close = closes
note = notes
play = plays
say = says
study = studies
marry = marries
go = goes
do = does
miss = misses
buzz = buzzes
hatch = hatches
finish = finishes
teach = teaches

We use do/does to make questions and negative sentences:

Questions:

Do you work?
Does she speak English?

Negative sentences:

You do not (don't) work.
She does not (doesn't) work.

USES

1. Repeated actions. We use the present simple when an action is repeated or usual. That action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily or scheduled event, or something that often happens. Examples:

I play tennis.
The train leaves everymorning at 12 o'clock.
He plays tennis everyday.

2. Facts or generalizations. The present simple is used when talking about things which are true in general. Examples.

The earth goes round the sun.
Nurses look after patiens in hospitals.
Cats like milk.

3. Scheduled events in the near future. We sometimes use the present simple to talk about scheduled events in a near future. This is commonly used when talking about public transportation. Examples:

The train leaves tonight at 11 pm.
What time does the bus arrive tomorrow?

4. Suggestions. We can use the present simple to make suggestions. You can say Why don't you...? Example:

- I'm tired.
- Why don't you go to bed early?

Verb tenses: PRESENT CONTINUOUS

Form

The present continuous, also called present progressive, is really easy to make. It is the same for all verbs. We form it using the present simple of the verb to be followed by a verb + ing.

Affirmative

I am talking (or I'm talking)
You are talking (or you're talking)
He/she/it is talking (or he/she/it's talking)
We are talking (or we're talking)
You are talking (or you're talking)
They are talking (or they're talking)

Negative

We form the negative by adding 'not'.

I am not talking (or I'm not talking)
You are not talking (you're not talking or you aren't talking)
He/she/it is not talking (or he's not talking or he isn't talking)
We are not talking (we're not talking or we aren't talking)
You are not talking (you're not talking or you aren't talking)
They are not talking (or they're not talking)

Interrogative

In order to make sentences, you have to put the verb to be before the subject.

Am I talking?
Are you talking?
Is he/she/it talking?
Are we talking?
Are you talking?
Are they talking?

USE
1. We use the present continuous when we talk abotu something that is happening at the time of speaking.

- Where is Ann? She's working right now.
- Please don't make so much noise. I'm studying.

2. We can use this tense for temporary situations, when we feel something will not continue for a long time.

- I'm living in New York for a few months.
- She's working in a bar until she finishes her studies.

3. It can be used when talking about changing situations.

- Is your English getting better?
- The weather is improving.

4. The next use is for definite future arrangements (with a future time word). In this case we have already made a plan and we are pretty sure that the event will happen in the future.

- I'm meeting my father tomorrow.
- They are coming to the party at the weekend.

5. This tense can be used when we want to show that something happens too often and we don't like it.

- She's constantly missing the train.

Las destrezas comunicativas (I): Listening

Recomiendo especialmente dos programas, The show with no name, que presenta Alberto Alonso, y Drive Time, que presenta Kyle Millar.

ENGLISH LYRICS

Suerte y a practicar.

INTERROGATIVE CHALLENGE

Llegó Septiembre. El inicio del curso está próximo. ¿Hay mejor momento para ponerse con el inglés que éste? Aquí está el reto de esta semana. A practicar las oraciones interrogativas. Os recuerdo como funciona este ejercicio. Vosotros teneis que hacer preguntas para las respuestas que yo os dé. Por ejemplo. Si yo os digo Her name is Diane, ¿cuál sería la pregunta? Exacto: What is her name? Si yo os digo She is 18 years old, vosotros tendríais que responder How old is she? Si veis algo en negrita, es que la pregunta tiene que hacer referencia a la parte en negrita. Ejemplos:
She is buying bread at the supermarket.
Where is she buying bread?
She is buying bread at the supermarket.
What is she buying at the supermarket.

1.-/ I've gone to the supermarket twice so far this week.

2.-/ No. I haven't gone to the supermarket this week.

3.-/ Ann has been to London three times so far this year.

4.-/ Ann has been to London three times so far this year.

5.-/  Ann has been to London three times so far this year.

6.-/  He buys bread every day.

7.-/ Lysa is trying on a hat.

8.-/ Lysa is trying on a hat.

9.-/  Lysa is trying on a hat.

10.-/ I'm going to pay for the car up front.
